Soutra: Surgery & Superstition is part of a £7,000 HLF Stories, Stones and Bones grant that Surgeons’ Hall Museums received in May 2017. Throughout October, the Museums will host a series of events working collaboratively with Dig It! 2017, Mercat Tours and Traditional Arts and Culture Scotland.
4 October – Human Remains Conservator, Cat Irving, will host an intimate on disease in the Middle Ages. THIS EVENT IS NOW SOLD OUT.
14 October – Borders based storyteller and artist Mary Kenny will host a participatory workshop where attendees will be able to develop their own storytelling skills and talents. Tickets – Eventbrite
17 and 18 October – The Surgeons’ Hall Museums Learning Team will host their very first Medieval Elixir workshop for children, where parents and kids will get the chance to try their hand at apothecary and make their own elixir to take home with them. Tickets – Eventbrite
19 October – Surgeons’ Hall Museums will host Dr Brian Moffat for special lecture on the Soutra Aisle Monastic Hospital, a project Dr Moffat has been leading since the mid 1980s. Tickets – Eventbrite
28 to 29 October – To close the exciting month of Soutra-focused events, Surgeons’ Hall Museums are delighted to be showcasing A Cabaret of Pestilence, a multi-disciplinary showcase event, which features as part of the Museums at Night weekend and the Scottish International Storytelling Festival. On a guided tour through the streets of Edinburgh, ticket holders will be entertained by professional tour guides, storytellers, actors, a gospel choir and a community participants before finishing up at Surgeons’ Hall Museums for evening access to the Museums & special activities until 10pm.
