Scotland in Six – Hidden Gems

As part of Scotland’s Year of History, Heritage and Archaeology, Dig It! 2017 worked with partners across the country to celebrate Scotland’s six UNESCO World Heritage Sites with six unique events. We then set out to unearth six of our equally extraordinary Hidden Gems.

Unlike the World Heritage Sites, you won’t find these places featured in as many travel guides, postcards or Instagram feeds. They might be a little bit quieter, harder to find and rougher around the edges. You’ll have to step off the beaten track see some of them for your own eyes; it’s all part of the experience. Your reward is a piece of the past will surprise, delight and inspire you.

After two months of voting on Facebook, the six Hidden Gems sites have been revealed:

Govan Stones

Ardrossan Castle

The Howff

James Watt Cottage

Campbeltown Picture House

Lincluden Collegiate Church

Each site is supported by an organisation or group who works hard all year round to protect and promote these special places. The six winners are now preparing to host fantastic events in September as the centrepieces to Scottish Archaeology Month.
